Growing up the environmental mantra seemed to be all about “reduce,reuse,recycle”. It was a good concept,but as I’ve grown I’m noticed more and more commercial waste. We live in a disposable society that seems so focused on global warming that it forgets about the basics of some of our environmental problem.
Production,transportation and disposal of objects like single use water bottles are contributing factors to environmental problems. Problems such as global warming and overfilled landfills. There is no quick fix to our environmental problems without returning to the dark ages. But there are lots of little things that can contribute to helping.
There is also a lot of misinformation about new plastics,such as biodegradable plastics. These plastics could help reduce landfill waste,but only if we establish the proper infrastructure for such plastics to actually degrade instead of taking up space in landfills or contaminating recycling streams.
The main purpose of this blog is this Plastics are not the enemy –But how we use them just might be.
I hope to be able to address various issues about plastics and the environment while pointing out reasons why plastics have tremendously improved our society. This blog will probably feature a fair bit of plastics in medical applications because they are a passion of mine.
As for me,I’m a mechanical engineer who is currently a grad student in plastics engineering. I hope to do further studies in plastics in medical applications. I love plastics because of their versatility and how in proper use they can improve our safety,reduce costs and weight of products,and provide incredible innovation. I hate plastics because we often forget where plastic products come from and where they end up when we are done with them.
