Terminology –Biomaterials

When I first started learning about medical and sustainable plastics I found some of the terminology a little confusing. And I often find that people get mixed up when they use plastic terminology as well. Words that are confusing because they are relatively new to the general public are bioplastics,biomaterials,biodegradable plastics,oxo-degradable plastic,bio-feedstock plastics,resorbable and so on. My blog posts are often full of red spell check underlines because my computer is unsure if I am making up words.

Challenges of Sustainable Medical Plastics Design

Although we mostly think of plastics as a disposable commodity product,a quick visit to a medical facility will demonstrate the importance of plastics in the health care industry. Medical devices have their own set of regulations,standards,and concerns. Because the safety and health of the patient are paramount,sustainable design is not generally a concern.

While an individual may have environmental concerns,patients are generally unconcerned about the carbon footprint of the ventilator they are currently attached to.
